Epidemiologists and demographers use various different measures in measuring health, and for assessing the effects of exposure to different risks. In this screencast, some of the most widely used indicators are introduced. Whilst by no means a comprehensive list, those measures touched on provide a basis for a deeper exploration of population health. https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11746 Fri, 22 Dec 2017 15:46:49 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11746 How can statistics facilitate population health enquiry? The basis of statistics are considered using a study of people previously diagnosed with cancer as a basis. Descriptive and analytical statistics are discussed and their value to practitioners reflected on. https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11627 Tue, 12 Dec 2017 12:51:34 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11627 Data for population health In this screencast, data sources used in population health are discussed. The contention is made that understanding data can better enable research in the subject to be understood. It can also enable an understanding of those to whom practitioners provide care. https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11542 Mon, 04 Dec 2017 13:15:49 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11542 What is the practitioner’s role in population health? Population health may seem something beyond the remit of most healthcare practitioners. In this unit, Dr Iain Atherton argues that everyone's practice impinges on the wider determinants of health. Recognising the potential of practice will, he suggests, encourage and enable interventions and practice that can make a difference beyond the immediacy of the acute presenting condition. https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11364 Tue, 21 Nov 2017 19:04:45 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11364 Defining population health In this screencast, I introduce the ideas of population health. I set out its definition and put forward the contention that we cannot understand people's health without taking into account their temporal, spatial and social contexts - in other words, without taking into account population health. https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11325 Wed, 15 Nov 2017 16:49:25 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11325 TURAS Final Version Video on logging into TURAS and accessing My Learning Record for students on Critical Perspectives of Adult Health B Theory 5B https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11079 Wed, 18 Oct 2017 20:50:46 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/11079 Understanding the Ununderstandable This public lecture was about listening very carefully as a therapeutic intervention. The better you listen to someone the more likely it is that you will understand them. If you understand them you are more likely to be able to help them. Professor Austyn Snowden and associate Professor Mick Fleming first discuss some examples of this, and in particular discuss Karl Jaspers, one of the first psychiatrists to attempt to really understand people suffering delusions in the early twentieth century. Austyn then introduces the Scottish PROM, a five-item measure of spiritual care he created along with his chaplain colleagues in Scotland. The Scottish PROM is now used worldwide to help chaplains understand the needs of their patients and the impact of their interventions. Results show that when with a chaplain, ‘being able to talk about what was on my mind’ is the single most important element of anyone’s recovery. Austyn and Mick then respond to a series of questions from the audience. https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10994 Thu, 12 Oct 2017 15:54:11 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10994 Child Protection for 2a 2017 Child Protection lecture preparation for practice for first year nurses https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10983 Wed, 11 Oct 2017 17:39:52 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10983 Welcome to Module 4A A short guide to the module https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10630 Thu, 31 Aug 2017 15:46:07 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10630 Welcome to Moodle- APR 2017 overview of the module site for APR https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10627 Thu, 31 Aug 2017 12:07:19 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10627 Moodle Overview for PREBP 2017 overview of moodle site for students https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10626 Thu, 31 Aug 2017 12:04:25 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/10626 Population health for nurses - an introduction In this podcast, I argue that we, as nurses, have a role to play in addressing population health. While Finnish addiction therapists tend to see drinking to excess as intentional, French specialists tend to emphasise the addictive power of alcohol. Professor Chick reflects on 40 years in alcohol research and treatment. Alcohol remains our drug of choice in Scotland. But for some, the freedom to choose lessens. Can a non-judgemental dialogue nudge their decision-making, or had the brain been altered as burgeoning neuropharmacological research claims? Professor Chick was a leading researcher in the addiction field for a number of years and has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently the chief editor of Alcohol and Alcoholism, which is the official journal of the Medical Council on Alcohol. Professor Chick is an elected member of the scientific council of the Societe Francaise d'Alcoologie and is a member of the board of trustees of the General Services Office of Alcoholics Anonymous in the UK. https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/9381 Fri, 20 Jan 2017 14:35:21 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/9381 How To Enter The Elluminate Live Classroom This is a video is attached to Further Education and International Student Transition to Edinburgh Napier University: supporting the journey with technology Final Report by Karen Campbell https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/123 Tue, 25 Oct 2011 14:20:30 GMT https://onlinevideo.napier.ac.uk/Play/123
